Overview
This 8-day “Gateway Balkan Tour” is a profound journey through the historical and cultural heart of three captivating countries: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, and Montenegro. The adventure begins and ends in Sarajevo, offering a deep dive into the region’s Ottoman heritage, medieval history, and stunning natural landscapes. Your exploration starts in Sarajevo’s old quarters, which maintain an authentic Ottoman ‘carsija’ with oriental sweet shops and traditional food, and includes visits to iconic monuments like the Gazi Husrev bey’s mosque and the Latin Bridge. The tour then ventures south into the Herzegovina region, a “Mediterranean oasis,” to see the beautiful Kravice waterfalls and explore the historic city of Mostar, famed for its UNESCO-recognized Stari Most (Old Bridge). A visit to the serene Dervish Tekke at the source of the Buna River in Blagaj adds a spiritual dimension to the journey.
The itinerary extends to the stunning Adriatic coast, with a city tour of Dubrovnik in Croatia, the UNESCO-protected “pearl of the Adriatic,” and continues into Montenegro to discover the medieval walled town of Kotor and the vibrant coastal city of Budva. The return journey to Sarajevo is a historical exploration in itself, passing through the beautiful city of Trebinje and the “open-air museum” of Stolac, before a unique visit to the UNESCO-protected Necropolis of Radimlja to see the mysterious medieval ‘stecak’ tombstones. The final days are spent exploring more of Bosnia’s rich history, from the Olympic mountain Bjelasnica and Sarajevo’s Tunnel Museum to the medieval town of Travnik and the poignant Ahmici village memorial.
