Overview
This 9-day “Green (North) Turkey Tour” is an extraordinary journey that contrasts the imperial majesty of Istanbul with the lush, verdant landscapes and rich history of Turkey’s northern Black Sea region. The adventure begins in Istanbul before flying you to Trabzon, the gateway to the Pontic Alps, an area renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Your exploration of the north starts with a visit to the dramatic 4th-century Sumela Monastery, clinging to a cliffside within Altindere National Park, followed by a scenic drive over Zigana Mountain and an exploration of the colorful Karaca Cave. The tour then delves deeper into the region’s heart, taking you to Uzungöl, a “hidden paradise,” and into the Rize province, famous for its tea and kiwi plantations. You’ll journey through the Firtina (Storm) Valley to the beautiful Ayder Plateau and take a gentle trek to the magnificent Goksu Fall.
The itinerary then turns westward, traveling through cities steeped in history. You’ll visit Samsun, a pivotal city where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk started the Turkish War of Independence, and Amasya, the 3000-year-old hometown of the geographer Strabo, nestled dramatically in a river cleft. Before returning to Istanbul, you’ll enjoy the tranquility of Bolu and a walk around the famous Abant Lake, surrounded by pine trees. The final days of the tour are spent back in Istanbul, experiencing its iconic highlights from a new perspective, including a Bosphorus Cruise, a visit to the aromatic Spice Bazaar, and a tour of the Old City’s Topkapi Palace and Blue Mosque, providing a grand finale to this comprehensive circuit of Turkey’s green north.
